Resolving Child Custody Disputes In The Portland Area

There is a great deal of misinformation about what influences child custody agreements. The fact that the other child's parent has a new boyfriend or girlfriend is rarely going to be sufficient to impact arrangements. However, if that boyfriend or girlfriend is abusive or engaging in illegal activity, that is going to make a difference.

At the Hollywood-area law office of Richard E. Fowlks, we have more than 35 years of legal experience resolving child custody and parenting time issues for people throughout the Portland area. We know the factors that impact child custody arrangements and other family law issues, and we are honest and upfront about them. Our goal is to do what is best for you and your child.

Legal Custody And Physical Custody

In Oregon, child custody comes in two parts: legal custody and physical custody.

  • Legal custody addresses major decision-making rights, including the right to make decisions about school, religion, medical treatment and activities like sports and summer camps.
  • Physical custody addresses where the child lives. The parent who has the child the majority of the time is the physical custodian. Of course, the other parent typically has the right to parenting time, formerly referred to as visitation.

Our lawyer will help you determine the type of custody that is right for you and take the necessary steps to achieve arrangements that work for you and your child.

Modifications To Child Custody

Child custody agreements are not set in stone. They can be modified if life circumstances require it. Changes in work schedule, remarriage, the birth of new children, the child's age and other factors may lead to a modification. We can assist with these changes.
